The little flap door on my outside vent hood is broken — repair or replace?

Usually replace, and it's a small job. On the 1950s–60s single-story tract homes here, the original hood is often a thin metal louvered cover that's been painted over two or three times, so the flap either won't swing or won't seat shut. Once paint has bonded the hinge, freeing it rarely lasts. On the older bungalows near the village you sometimes find a hood mounted into wood siding or stucco that has softened around the fasteners, and that needs a new hood plus a proper seal rather than a patch. A flap that hangs open is worth dealing with — it lets dust, insects and rodents back into the duct, and on La Mesa's dry hillside lots there's plenty of dust looking for a way in. If the hood body is sound and only the flapper is stuck, we'll say so and leave it alone.

My laundry is in a lower-floor room and the vent runs uphill to daylight — is that a problem?

It's the most common layout question we get in La Mesa. Split-level and hillside lots push laundry into a garage, a basement-level room, or a lower-floor closet, and the duct then has to travel up or out through a crawlspace before it reaches an exterior wall. Long runs and vertical rises both cut airflow, and lint that can't stay airborne settles at the bends and at the bottom of any vertical section. It isn't a defect on its own, but it does mean the run has less margin than a short straight one, so buildup shows up as longer drying times sooner. We clean the full length from both ends where we can get access, rather than just pulling what's reachable from the dryer.
