Yes, and those short runs surprise people. A garage laundry with a few feet of duct to a side-wall cap seems like it can't clog, but the exterior hood is usually the failure point. The original flapper louvers on 1950s–70s houses in Clairemont, Serra Mesa, and Allied Gardens are often painted over, stuck partway open, or packed with lint at the hinge. When the flap can't swing freely, lint stacks up right behind it and backs into the last foot of pipe. It's a quick clean compared to a long attic run, but skipping it is how a short run turns into a restricted one.

Older Craftsman and Spanish bungalows in North Park, Kensington, and Golden Hill almost never had a dryer in the original plan, so the venting was added later — sometimes decades later, sometimes more than once. What we typically find is undersized or flexible ducting snaked through a basement, a crawl space, or along a porch wall, with more elbows than the run needs and slack sections that sag and collect lint at the low point. Foil accordion duct behind the dryer is another common one; it traps lint in every ridge. Long dry times in these houses are usually about the path, not the dryer itself, and we'll tell you if the run needs rework rather than just another cleaning.

What makes one San Diego dryer vent cleaning cost more than another?

The run decides it. A garage or side-wall vent in a postwar tract home is the simplest job we do. A two-story house in Mira Mesa, Rancho Peñasquitos, or Carmel Valley where the laundry is upstairs and the duct climbs through the attic to a roof jack takes longer, needs roof access, and often needs work from both ends. Condo units downtown and in Uptown with interior stacked closets fall in between, though building access rules can add time. Retrofitted ducting in an older bungalow is the wild card, because we don't always know the actual path until we're in it. We look at the run and tell you what it takes before we start.

Does living near the coast change anything, compared to the inland canyons?

It changes what we find. Coastal neighborhoods hold marine humidity, and damp lint packs down and sticks to duct walls instead of blowing through — it also feeds corrosion at metal roof jacks and wall caps. Inland, closer to the canyons, it's hot and dusty, so the lint is drier but there's more airborne grit mixing in, and exterior hoods get gummed up faster. Both end up restricted; they just get there differently. Neither one is a reason to skip a cleaning, and if you dry a lot of loads either condition will shorten the interval.

Same-day is sometimes possible, usually when there's an opening in the part of the county we're already working that day, so a call earlier in the morning has better odds. Otherwise most San Diego addresses get scheduled within a few days. Two things slow it down: roof-vented upstairs laundries, which we don't do in wind or wet weather, and condo towers downtown or in Uptown, where we may need to clear access with building management first.
